Chief J.W. Verbert - Chief J.W. Verbert has been a member of the CFD's Walton Engine & Hose Company in 1996 at the ripe old age of 16. His enthusiasm and hard work moved him up the ranks in his company to make LT. in 2003 and Captain in 2004 until he reached the office of Assistant Chief in 2006.

If you recognize the name of Chief Verbert from Chester, then you may be thinking of Chief J.W. Verbert's father or Grandfather. This Firefighting family has been serving the Department for well over 50 years.

Our history is a long, proud one!

Department Officers

The Chester Fire Department (CFD) is made up of 3 fire companies and proudly serves the Chester, New York Community within the Chester Fire District.

CFD is a member of the Orange County Mutual Aid System, in Battalion 9, along with Goshen Fire Department and Campbell Hall Fire Department.

In 1893 Walton Engine & Hose Company was formed. They were for all intents and purposes the Department until 1955 when Sugar Loaf Engine Company was organized.

The following year 1956, the Chester Fire Department became Official and has been serving the Chester Fire District for over 50 years.

As the years went by, our community grew and so did the need for greater firefighting capabilities. In 1973 Trout Brook Engine & Hose Company was established on the "South Side" of our large fire district.

The Board of Fire Commissioners

The Chester, NY Fire District consists of seven publicly-elected officials, the Board of Fire Commissioners, each of whom serves a five year term. Much like the volunteer firefighters they work with, they are not paid to serve as Commissioners. It is their responsibility to provide the necessary apparatus, buildings and equipment needed to assist the Chester Fire Department in the fire and rescue activities that are essential for the protection of life and property within the Chester Fire District. It is also their responsibility to operate the Chester Fire District in accordance with the laws of the State of New York.

The board meets on a monthly basis, to oversee the operation of the Fire District and to make policies and procedures under which the Fire District, the Fire Department, and the Walton Engine & Hose Company, the Sugar Loaf Engine Company and the Trout Brook Engine & Hose Company operate.

They remain keenly aware of the fiduciary responsibility they hold in representing the taxpayers within the Fire District.

As Commissioners, they are mandated to follow a strict formula in preparing the budget in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, including specified spending limits. Their process is a public one, and they welcome the input of the residents and taxpayers we represent in the Chester Fire District.

Fire District Public & Legal Notices

Please take notice that the year 2009 regular meeting Schedule for the Chester Fire District for the Towns of Chester, Goshen, and Blooming Grove, County of Orange, State of New York shall be as follows:

The first Monday of the month, except for Tuesday, September 8, 2009, and Tuesday, December 8, 2009. The meetings are held at 8:00 p.m. at the Main Fire Station,81 Main Street, Chester, New York.

All meetings of the Chester Fire District are open to the public. This notification is being given to the news media pursuant to the provisions of Section 94 of the Public Officers’ Law of the State of New York.
